Useful information for Primary Grades
Judo was first formulated in Japan by Professor Kano in 1882. It is both a Japanese Martial Art and a competitive sport. As it is a Japanese Martial Art the language and etiquette used is Japanese.
Politeness, good manners and common decency are all part of Judo. All students of Judo are expected to train themselves in Judo Etiquette. Refer to judo etiquette section of the website.
St.Ives club is a member to the BJC which stands for British Judo Council. The B.J.C teaches Judo with traditional Japanese techniques and principles. The president is Mr.Robin Otani. The Cornwall Area President is Mr John Couch 7th Dan.
As Judo is a contact sport safety is paramount to prevent injuries. To prevent injury Judo players need to practice safely under supervision in the Dojo. Judo should not be done outside the Dojo and should not be done on people who do not do Judo. Students must always follow their Sensei's instructions on the mat. You must act sensibly and always let your Sensei know straight away if some one is hurt during practice.
Hygeine
It is important when you practice judo that your Judo suit is clean, your hands and feet are clea, nails should be short and clean to stop scratches and infections. Remember it is not very nice to practice with someone who is dirty as well as being unhygienic! Zories (sandals) should be worn to the edge of the mat not smelly trainers. Grit brought in on the bottom of dirty shoes can cause tears in the training mat and cause injury.
