New to Judo?
At your first lesson please wear strong but loose fitting clothing, with no metal parts. Tracksuit Bottoms are ideal. Female participants wear a T-shirt which must be long enough to be tucked right into their trouser. Initially, you can borrow a jacket & belt from the club. Short clean finger and toe nails are a must for Judo, so nail varnish should be removed. Long hair must be tied back and be free from metal clips, pins, beads and slides. No shoes are worn. Flip flops are usually worn to the side of the mat as outside shoes are not worn in the training area.
Before you start Judo you must obtain a provisional Judo licence. This can be arranged on your first visit to your local Judo club. At St.Ives a provisional licence and club membership currently costs £10 and covers you for 3 months insurance. In addition to this you must pay a nightly mat fee, currently £2. At the end of 3 months you can then decide if you wish to take out a full Licence and membership to St.Ives Judo Club (please refer to "Club Fees"). A full licence covers you for 12 months Insurance and club membership and the nightly mat fee is then £1.50.
If you decide you would like to become a full member of St.Ives club, then a full judo outfit known as a gi is required and this can be ordered at the club. A Junior suit costs approximately £20 and an adult suit costs approximately £40. At St.Ives we also have a selection of second hand suits.
Please be sure to always give in your name on arrival to the front
desk, our register is vital in case of fire. Please check that your BJC licence is in date. You are not insured if it is out of date.
